Who are we?
The University of Pavia is one of the world’s oldest academic institutions, with origins dating back to the 9th century. An edict by King Lotharius in 825 acknowledged the existence of a higher education institution in Pavia, primarily focused on law, and designated it as the principal center of learning in Northern Italy.
The Department of Chemistry, based on campuses in Pavia, Lombardy, is internationally renowned for its research in catalysis, photochemistry, synthetic chemistry, imaging agents, and natural products chemistry. It has been recognized as a Department of Excellence for the 2023-2027 period.
In 2013, the Organic Chemistry Department celebrated 30 years of dedicated research in the field. The department’s research team actively collaborates with industry and academia, offering expertise and resources to address synthetic challenges.
Ambition statements
The Department of Chemistry at UNIPV has extensive experience in developing chemical processes for catalyst production. Its main role in the NEO-CYCLE project is focused on upcycling Nd and B extracted from spent magnets by synthesizing boronates for Suzuki-Miyaura coupling, either through reactions with the corresponding aryl- or heteroaryl-lithium compounds or via metal- or photocatalyzed reactions. Nd will also be used in the synthesis of intermediates for Diels-Alder reactions to produce building blocks essential for prostaglandin synthesis. Additionally, the department will provide support during the end-user validation activities.
Technologies related to project
UNIPV offer excellent facilities (NMR Bruker 200-300-400-700 MHz, Liquid Mass Thermo LTQ-XL with ESI source, H-ESI, High Resolution MS spectrometer, APCI Thermo DSQ GC-MS, UPLC Jasco XLC, GC HP 5990 II, HPLC with enantiopure stationary phase columns, SFC-HPLC) thus being particularly appreciable in terms of cooperation between different partners. This is undoubtedly the key for the development of highly interdisciplinary projects.
